SMA inverters: full service

There are SMA inverters that have been working on Portuguese roofs for many years. When one starts to fail, the question is nearly always the same: is it worth repairing, or is it time to replace it? We help you answer.

Units with many years of service

The most common models in homes are the Sunny Boy, single-phase, and the Sunny Tripower, three-phase. An inverter has a typical life of 10 to 15 years, shorter than the panels,1 so a system installed a decade ago may be reaching that stage.

What the unit tells you

Older models show events and warnings on a small display; newer ones use indicator lights and an interface you reach over the home network or the manufacturer app. Either way, it helps us to know:

  • the number or text of the event shown;
  • the colour and state of the lights;
  • whether the inverter switches off at certain times, for example around noon;
  • the exact model, printed on the label.

Repair or replace an older SMA

When the fault is a one-off and the unit is in good condition, repair can make sense. When faults keep coming back or parts are no longer available for the model, we tell you and explain inverter replacement, including compatibility with the panels you already have.

Lost access to Sunny Portal?

It's common: the monitoring account was left in the installer's name and the installer stopped answering. Tell us what you have (model, serial number, old emails) and we look with you at what can be recovered.

SMA, Sunny Boy, Sunny Tripower and Sunny Portal are trademarks of their respective owners. Sol de Volta is a company independent of the manufacturer and doesn't speak for the brand.

Frequently asked questions

My SMA is more than ten years old. Can it still be repaired?

Sometimes. It depends on the fault and on parts being available for the model. In the assessment we tell you whether repair is worth it or replacing is better.

The display shows an event I don't understand. What do I do?

Take a photo of the display and of the inverter label and add them to your request, or type the text shown. We explain what it means in your case.

Can I keep using the inverter while I wait?

If it keeps producing without overheating or strange noises, usually yes. If it smells of burning or keeps switching off, switch off the installation breaker.
